Sacrificing Your Life
If presented with the option of biological immortality, would that increase or reduce your willingness to sacrifice yourself?

Great question! Well I like existing in this state, evolutionary forces are responsible I believe. My purpose in life is to end the suffering of other sentient beings. So, if I thought that I could alleviate more suffering by dieing than by being as efficient as possible with my alleviation efforts in an indefinite possibly infinite lifespan, then I would be more likely to sacrifice myself. However, something about that does not sit right with me and I would, depending on the situation, not sacrifice myself. If it meant that sentient beings would never be free of suffering, if I did not sacrifice myself,, than I would begrudgingly sacrifice myself. If it just meant that it would take a little longer for that goal to be achieved, I would not sacrifice myself.

I think that the reason we would care to sacrifice ourselves in the first place is the same reason why we want to preserve ourselves. By sacrificing ourselves in a direct biological sense we are often furthering our own genes or even ideas that are a result of those genes that, when mixed with some other things, make us who we are. Preserving ourselves and actually committing the act of self sacrifice both achieve the same thing, but are appropriate responses to differing scenarios.

send me a notification that you replied! fakeajake@yahoo.com Thanks for the question :)

In the future, ideal nano-bot technology will be able to preserve the consciousness in a device as other nano-bots repair the body back to life. Of course, complete annihilation of the body would prevent reuse, but maybe there could be ways to save a consciousness in a safe location for future downloading into a body. If this guaranteed technology was available to everyone, then there would be less sacrificing of one's life simply because the person or people about to die would be brought back to life. There would be no need to put yourself through the experience, unless the goal would be to prevent other people from suffering through a temporary death.
